2023 Indi-Pac Day 26 Report

Wednesday April 12, 2023: It was a more respectable departure time this morning, 6:04am. The Sydney Opera House and all that came with eventually getting there, was now “only” 524 kilometres away. The abstract was beginning to take a turn for the tangible.

For obvious reasons the Monaro Highway had been on my mind for quite a while, for the same reason that a 20 kilometre flat, straight stretch of Kansas State Route 96 had also been, almost 2 years ago.

As if reading into the solemnity of the memories, mother nature decided to give the old smog machine a bit of a nudge…..

Wednesday April 12, 2023: Fun conditions on the Monaro Highway, just out of Cooma.

Wednesday April 12, 2023: Fun conditions on the Monaro Highway, just out of Cooma. Take 2.

The fog soon cleared though thank goodness which relaxed me a little and then it simply became a matter of settling into a rhythm, plugging away on this 100k stretch of bland bitumen that will long live in infamy within the cycling community.

Wednesday April 12, 2023: Plugging away on the Monaro Highway…..

Wednesday April 12, 2023: Mike Hall’s Ghost Bike, just off to the left.

Wednesday April 12, 2023: RIDE IN PEACE MIKE.

We can only try…

And then the rain came down…….

Wednesday April 12, 2023: As the sign says.

It was right about the point that I passed the above sign, or maybe even just before, that a chap who was parked up on the hard shoulder of the south bound lane came sprinting across the road.

What the…..

A dotwatcher! Another name I cannot remember I’m afraid but I seem to recall that he mentioned that he was at one point involved with Audax Australia. Anyway, we had a nice roadside chat before the rain became to heavy.

Wednesday April 12, 2023: More Monaro Highway.

And then finally onto the Canberra Bike Path system:

Wednesday April 12, 2023: Canberra bike path.

Wednesday April 12, 2023: More Canberra bike path.

Wednesday April 12, 2023: And more….

Wednesday April 12, 2023: And more, with Lake Burley glimpses on the left.

Wednesday April 12, 2023: And yet more Canberra bike path.

Wednesday April 12, 2023: Now that’s a pace line!

Wednesday April 12, 2023: More Canberra bike path.

Wednesday April 12, 2023: Canberra bike lane.

Hang on a minute, I’d recognise that designer stubble and cheeky Pommy grin anywhere………its Matty Boy Smith (aka “Kenny Behren” from Canberra). He’d come out in this inclement weather bearing gifts of snacks and plenty of chat. To be fair there was shitloads to talk about, like what have you been up to since I had a beer with you in Fremantle a month ago?!

It was bloody good to see him! As I mentioned in yesterdays post both Di and him had been my people out on the road. Matt had been the dot over the horizon that tweaked my competitive instincts on the odd occasion but he well and truly answered every “attack” and then some. A very strong rider. A great effort for his first ultra.

Did I mention that it was bloody good to see him!

Wednesday April 12, 2023: Hanging with Matt Smith.

Wednesday April 12, 2023: Hanging with Matt Smith. Take 2.

Wednesday April 12, 2023: Had to be done…………….”I’ll name you honourable member for………..”

Wednesday April 12, 2023: Matching squints.

Wednesday April 12, 2023: Canberra streets.

Wednesday April 12, 2023: Still hanging with Matt Smith.

Matt and I hung at the Macas on the far side of town for a while and then it was back slaps and pedaling in opposite directions.

397 kilometres to the Sydney Opera House!

Wednesday April 12, 2023: I hereby concur.

Wednesday April 12, 2023: I also hereby concur.

Onto the Federal Highway for a bit, the Old Federal Highway for a bit and then a right turn, heading south (far from an optimal direction at this point of the ride) on Bungendore Road.

After about 20 minutes a pesky light drizzling rain became an untenable steady downpour.

Fuck this!

I spied a random bus shelter and laid up there for a while. Unbelievably soon later a dotwatching family of four on their way back home (to Canberra I think) from an Easter driving holiday pulled up for a chat. More names that I fail to recall but photos were taken……on their camera.

The heavy rain ceased and so it was back into it.

Wednesday April 12, 2023: The unused Old Federal Highway.

Wednesday April 12, 2023: The occasionally pot hole ridden Bungendore Road.

Wednesday April 12, 2023: As the sign says….

Wednesday April 12, 2023: More Bungendore Road action.

Wednesday April 12, 2023: More Bungendore Road action. Take 2.

Wednesday April 12, 2023: More Bungendore Road action. Take 3.

Rolling into the town of Bungendore for supplies just before 5pm….

…..fuck it I’m getting a beer.

…..fuck it I’m getting a room!

358 kilometres to the Sydney Opera House!

Wednesday April 12, 2023: Ahhhhhh that’s better!
