2023 Indi-Pac Day 23 Report

Sunday April 9, 2023: Back on route at 7:21am. The overwhelming emotions were that of frustration and determination……..yep, an interesting combo!

I was feeling frustrated at my distinct lack of progress over the last 4 days. My average daily distances were cratering, from 222 kilometres per day over the first 18 days to 160 kilometres per day over the last four days. Yeah, geographical and weather stuff, blah, blah, blah……..but I wasn’t helping myself with the late starts – 8am was the average over the corresponding four days. And here I was after recognising the rot and still not introducing rubber to bitumen until 7 bloody 21 am!

(maybe I should throw uptight in there too).

The determination came from the burning desire to smash the first few hours riding, get some good distance under the belt and make up for yet another tardy start.

For the first 30 minutes it was looking good. I was chatting away animatedly with Melissa who was up early with the boys and their cousins who I could hear in the background getting ready for an Easter Egg hunt. I was feeling ultra confident, and penciling in a finishing time at the Sydney Opera House to help with her planning – this was our first trip to Oz in 4 years, so there was a lot to get done in a quickly reducing amount of time before heading back to the US on the 19th April.

Aw Fuck!

What?

Flat Tyre, gotta go….

2 hours off the road!

Why! I hear you ask.

Long story short:

  • I mentioned in an earlier post that there is absolutely no doubt that I am the most inept roadside bike-fixer-upper-er that has every entered one of these crazy long rides…….borderline criminal it is.
  • I was flustered.
  • I attempted a new way of fixing a flat that I had only just learned from my local bike shop. I run tubeless so instead of dumping the sealant and just throwing in a tube as I was semi proficient at doing I tried to plug the hole with strips of that sticky stuff (yep, clueless)……..I tried and tried but couldn’t make this way work although I did go through two C02 cannisters……don’t ask me why or how!
  • Instead I went back to the tried and tested throw a tube in method, but on the first attempt to pump it up I snapped off the valve core and had to insert another one using my never used in the wild before valve core tool.
  • Shit was strewn all over the place and it took me a while to re-pack it all.
  • Given the combination of the two methods I now had a 3mm diametre hole where the flat occurred.

Furious with myself I absolutely caned it over the next 10ks to Yackandandah (pop. 2,008).

Fun times!

Gum Tree Pies is definitely worth the stop. They come in all manner of fillings. Whilst spilling piping hot That Chicken all over myself a local dotwatcher came to say G’day – nice bloke but I can’t remember his name I’m afraid.

Time was marching on….

It was almost 11am and I’d only banked 21k’s!

I quickly polished off the Lamb and Mint pie and then quickly packed up and headed across the street to the Foodworks Supermarket.

Another chat with the old bloke raising money for Legacy…………..I literally couldn’t help myself.

Spoiler Alert – I right royally fucked up this resupply. I gave no thought to the fact that today was Easter Sunday and tomorrow was…….drum roll please……Easter Monday. Thus there was no guarantee that any services were going to be open over the next day and a half!

Yep, I didn’t get enough stuff.

Back into it…..

Sunday April 9, 2023: The road out of Yackandandah….

Sunday April 9, 2023: I don’t particularly want to go back to Omeo, left turn it is.

Lake Hume

Lake Hume is a large reservoir created by a dam across the Murray River downstream of its junction with the Mitta River that was constructed in the early 20th century for flood mitigation, irrigation and water supply. It and the Murray River was to become my companion for the remaining daylight hours.

I came across it at around 1pm and bid it adieu from the Mount Alfred Gap Lookout just after 6pm.

Arranging accomodation in Tintaldra was far from an easy process – almost non-existent phone service, missed calls, text messages left etc, etc.

It is hard to describe my relief when I finally received the following text messages from my man Rick!:
